Our story
Living in France for nearly two decades, I developed a keen interest in - and deep love of - wine. Its harmonious marriage of time, craftsmanship, and care.
In 2021, I planted 1,540 Pinot Noir vines across one acre of marl soil, similar to the terroir that produces Burgundy's world-renowned wines. The vineyard's ideal north-south orientation maximises photosynthesis and helps the vines reach their full potential.
From pruning, tying, bud-rubbing, frost protection, disease control, and harvest, I work year round to undertake all of these tasks - either meditatively alone, or working closely with friends and local supporters.
Through our natural vineyard management and our low-impact approach, we work in harmony with nature to cultivate the best grapes that we can. I foster biodiversity through native tree planting, careful mowing patterns, and minimal pesticide use. This supports insects, butterflies, and creates habitat for bats, birds, and hedgehogs. Around the property, we've now counted 50 bird species and seven types of bats. The diverse plantings provide food and shelter for pollinators and beneficial insects, enriching our vineyard ecosystem.
Many decisions require judgment rather than following rules, and I believe attention to detail makes all the difference. In growing grapes to make this Marlbank, I’ve been humbled over and over again by the magic of what our nature can produce when it’s looked after with love.
I've spent 35 years in agriculture and viticulture, including 17 years working in French vineyards. Through this experience, I’ve developed an understanding of the land, its needs and its potential. The warming weather has enabled me to grow wine here. But I’m well aware that climate change will cause devastating effects in other areas, so I’m committed to preserving the nature around me whilst I grow my grapes.
